CREATIVE NON-FICTION SAMPLE
Work in Progress
Excerpt from a longer autobiographical narrative essay entitled "Manhood." Early version was a finalist in The University of Michigan's Hopwood Literary Awards

It is no secret that I am an adult survivor of severe early life child maltreatment. Despite outward appearances, my inner life in adulthood was for many years devastated by treatment refractory CPTSD extending from years of violence and abuse my caregivers subjected me to at home. This eventually culminated in a terrifying eventual later-life addiction to intravenous meth and cocaine.

It was only through discovering effective trauma treatment (EMDR+IFS) that I am alive and well today. My aim in going into social work and public health is to help others struggling with trauma and substance use find ways to heal and go on to live happier, healthier, and ultimately more satisfying lives.

It is possible to live a life without pain.

Summer 2011
Many years ago while interning at WNYC, I wrote film reviews for Richard Pena, director of NYC Lincoln Center's prestigious Film Society, which he read aloud in a televised program called REEL 13 INDIES. This is the footage prior to the final cut.
M.A. THESIS, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

A distinctly heavy academic exercise but a true labor of love -- I'm very proud of this. To date I feel this is a testament to some of my strongest writing and critical analyses. which I always enjoy adapting to new contexts, of course.

"THE BOX" -- EARLY CREATIVE NON-FICTION / NARRATIVE ESSAY
1999
Semi-finalist in The University of Michigan's Hopwood Literary Awards, spring 2000. About immigration, domestic violence, and the intergenerational transmission of trauma long before I even knew the latter was a concept. 25 years later these are a major part of my doctoral work. You know what they say about turning pain into purpose: it takes awhile to get there
